Welcome to CorningTwang.com
Be part of the effort to recognize Duane Eddy as one of our important notable locals by donating to our effort to install a historical marker.
Duane Eddy is not only a guitar legend and a member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, but he was very proud to be born in Corning, New York. (b. 1938 - d. 2024)
Duane was born in Corning Hospital on April 28, 1938, and lived on East 2nd Street near Denison Park for his first five years. His father drove a delivery truck for CoBakCo, a Corning bakery. They moved to Bath where he spent his elementary school years and gave his first musical performance at a 4th grade assembly.
His parents bought a grocery store near Keuka Lake, west of Penn Yan. That's where he spent his junior high years, and is credited with creating their mascot, the Mustangs, during a school drawing contest. He also gave his first on-air radio performance in Hornell.
His family moved to Arizona when he was 13 where he attended high school in Coolidge, met Jimmy Delbridge and started a band, then met the formidable DJ Lee Hazlewood who encouraged him to write his own music. As a result, he created his "twangy" sound by playing amped-up melody on the lower strings, putting the electric guitar center stage, and the rest is rock & roll history.
